'Hello, can I sit here?', asked he, hoping to make a new friend. He was the new guy, an enigma. Cliques had already been formed by now and he had spent the last two days sitting alone during the break.
Then, he spotted her, engrossed in the latest Sidney Sheldon book. Her face glowing with a charm he had only read about in books, she sat there unaware of the dark brown eyes admiring her.
'Sure, why not?', she said hesitantly, disappointed that she would now have to stop reading. The unraveling of the mystery behind the murders would have to wait a bit longer.
'So, what's up? I'm Lily. And you are?'
Silence. And then both gave each other an awkward smile.
15 years later..
'But Nate, why? Why did you do this to me? What about our children?'
'I'm sorry, Lil, I just don't love you the way I did when I first saw you, reading your favourite book. You're not that Lily anymore. You've lost the fire, the passion. I just don't feel that excitement with you anymore.'
'Oh, so I'm supposed to have all the passion and energy while I slog the entire day at the hospital and raise our children, while you laze around the house, sneak behind my back and cheat on me? How amazing! How lucky I feel to have met you, Nathan!'
And that day, he walked out on her, leaving behind much more than their children and his responsibilities towards his family.
He left behind a broken heart, shattered dreams. All without a well deserved goodbye.
