The conceit and masked comparisons that I have come across while reading Metaphysical Poetrh are mind blowing. There are no limits to the exaggerated, far flung comparisons and hyperbolic ideas it portrays.
This poem is called The Flea. Published two years after the death of the poet, it is in fact an erotic poem. It is the denial of a woman towards sexual profanity, and how the wit of the poet compares consummation with an irritating insect such as a flea.
These lines form the first few lines of the second stanza. Based on the iambic tetra and pentameter intermittently, it has vivid imagery and clever wit. The main three protagonists are the man, the woman and the flea. With the guise of the bute of the flea, the man tries to coax his beloved as he urges and explains how due to the bite of the flea, they are already mingled in blood.
There are schemes of shock and playful flirtations as he makes comparisons and false grief upon the death of the flea and how the flea did not need to woo her as much as him,to well, touch her.
It is a smart play of words, in the typical metaphysical style. The devices of personifying something as repulsive as a flea to become a symbol innate raw passion and love is definitely a mastery of words and thoughts.
Read the poem and you will see what poetry can achieve playfully.
