Adhiti devo bhava
It was a pleasant evening, with a unpleasant- tiresome journey fixture. What annoyed me more was the announcement given by the station authorities, "train number xxxxxx Cochin to Mangalore express has been delayed by 30 minutes". Then what else, annoyingly, I gave a vexed "ugghhhhh". Since it won't fritter away time, I started to gawk around, building hundreds and hundreds of thoughts, watching on a baby girl playing on her own, her father trying to make sure of her safety, her delighted smile, killed a portion of my delayed time. I took out a chips pack and had it until I was full. As any typical indian would do, I dumped the empty packet on the platform. Thereafter, made my eyes run along with a train which passed by, then on another which had a stopping here. Passengers rushed out of the compartments, many hurrying to get a rickshaw, few moving to other platforms, few getting down with utmost caution and few getting in. Among all the passengers, a person made me give a proper glance at her. She wasn't of Indian origin, maybe a European, from my wild guesses. It seemed like she was searching for something, after making her eyes run along the platform, she cleared her wrinkled forehead and moved towards her destination. My eyes followed her, fascinatingly she neared a dustbin. I gave a curious watch over it, "but why did she search for a dustbin, so diligently?" Astonishingly and with the poke of guilt, I saw her taking out an emptied food package, which she intended to dump it only in a dustbin. She walked away into the crowd, but her good deed remained in my heart. "She was just a guest to our country who could exploit anything in here, since an old indian proverb says, "adhiti Devo bhava" ( guests must be treated), but she chose not to behave as any hosts in this country does, she chose to take the responsibility as a human being for cleanliness. It poked me really hard, "if she could do why can't I?" I picked up the emptied chips packet which was still near my leg and threw it in the dustbin.
