The Black Ants
As the day breaks
My parents readied the food on the cane table
And would warn me before they go to the field,
"Do not make your siblings cry,
Feed them well,
Tend to the domestic animals, and the kitchen garden
And most importantly,
Do not make loud noise
But lend your ear to inmwan choungpao anytime of the day."
As we go on with our daily activities
We would hear a thampei
Calling for attention from the top of a hillock-
"Ho, inmwan bi kami kama
Chounglaa amme ngailo.
Namphei lampui la tangem braam hungna rwe."
Then, i would gather my sense
Take my siblings inside-
Give them a water to drink,
Feed them hurriedly
And ask them not to make a noise or cry
The black ants will take them far far away.
