One rainy night, several weeks ago
Plagued by thunderstorms
She shivered as she closed the windows
And went to sleep earlier than the norm
Sound asleep in covers
Made up of thick wool and silk
She was all alone when unbeknown to her
Someone decided to her slumber bilk
He was akin to a puff of smoke
Dark as that rainy cold night
Made of shadows- he knew her thoroughly
A friend who today was nowhere in sight
There was no creaking of the wooden floors
As he broke into the house and wandered upstairs
The gloom of the night followed him
As he slowly snuck into her nightmares
He searched for her most precious possession
Careful not to disturb her sleep
And on finding it he felt elated for he had
Managed it all without her hearing him creep
Bagging it up he slung it on his back
Over his shoulder and ventured downstairs
Glad to be the owner of such a possession
He snuck out of the house unawares
Come morn she woke up with a start
Fearful something felt quite amiss
She pushed aside all the strange notions
Shoving the nightmare into an abyss
It was a few days before she read about
Her prized possession being called his instead
It only then she realised her life’s work
Had been stolen from inside her head
Unable to bear the grief of having been betrayed
By someone she had called a friend
She refused to write another word ever again
Lest he come to steal whatever she penned
What did he gain from stealing from her
Other than lose a friendship of a lifetime ?
Just because she trusted and let him in
He chose to commit an act so vile
How many times we steal from folk close to us
Proudly making it a part of our memoirs
No matter how small or unknown it is
What was not shall never be ours
