    THE BLACK LEGEND AT DEATH

I used to know a little boy,
Who lived down the street of Houston's Third Ward,
    George, with the beautiful spirit,
    I used to know him,
Often called 'Big Floyd' by his peers,
Known as' the Gentle Giant' by his teammates.

He used to live as a young man,
    Around downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota,
    George, black yet dispassionate,
    I used to know him,
    Until the knee-to-the-neck incident,
Then, the cold hand of death knocked at his door.

I used to know this black man,
Whose cries were inaudible except at the brink of death,
George, now alive with the loudest of voice,
    I used to know him,
Not only by his cries for justice,
But, for his death has made him a legend among us.
