    Brother

    Brother
Tell me which ways I am like you
Is our bond held closest in the dark eyes or the thick skin?
The arm tattoos or the armor?
The holiday foods or the rivers in our veins?
We have each rotated positions on the family couch
And there were times you did not realize
    I was on your side
    All throughout the family war
And when I tilt my chin
I am looking up at you
    Up to you
    Seeing through you
Adjusting my eyes to your lenses
Clearing the way amidst your pain
So tell me why you’re sad, brother
For there are revelations in you
    Darker than the skin
But I could help you heal
If you’d just let me in
What God called good, let no one separate
    Family
    Brother
Tell me which ways I am like you
