    A smeared performance

A couple with their little one
Walked in as the next client
    “So how are we today?”
    Asked the doctor
    Said ok, but remained defiant

As he ruffled through the results
The mother held back soft sob
    “Trust the doctor”,
Assured the father of the baby
“He is the finest in the job.”

On the table once, under the knife
In her eyes he could see all her fears
    Whether a success or failure
    This little affair, this performance
On their lives would be a smear

    As the doctor felt accomplished
The mother’s tears knew no bounds
The two of them walked out of the clinic
    As their child’s cries
    Diminished and finally drowned
