WE WERE SOLDIERS
Should we carry guns close to our bedsides?
Should we hold grenades even at meal times?
Why do we always have to live in fear?
Yet all you brought to us was unprepared battles
I saw a wagon pull up before us
They emerged and fear gripped our guts
Before any could make a run
Men of valour were lying cold on the ground
Watching my brothers on the sand
I could neither cry nor laugh
We were taught to be strong
But a song crept out of my heart
We were soldiers!! We were soldiers!!
Rest well brothers of valour
