    A voice

    I am black
    And I am not ashamed
They say I don’t have to be scared
Because I could pass as a different thing
They say you have nice curly hair
    And light skin
    You’ll be okay

    but I am black.

They won’t see nice curly hair
    And light skin
    pretty eyes
    nice teeth
    Because my skin is black

They won’t see that I am mixed
    And not just one thing
They won’t see that I am educated
    And I have dreams
    Because my skin is black
And to them I’m a nothing

Because I am black I am a serial number
    Placed in a broken system
To them I have no means
My life means not a thing

    I am black

I am black and I’m afraid
Not just for me but for my
Black brothers and sister because to walk out side means we dug our own graves

    I am black,
    and i am proud
    I’m a person
    A voice and I won’t back down
    You can’t keep me silent

    I am a person
    Not just a race
    We are not animals
    We can not be caged

    You say my kind
    Are thugs
    Because of our race
    We are “ uneducated “
    And should be tamed

    But I am not uneducated
And I can not be tamed
    You will hear my voice
    And soon
You will be the ones that want to change
