    Almost In

    By: Sarah Gregory

    back in old apartment
    complex on rundown
    darkened town I stay
    up until 3am reading
    poetry in moonlit
    blue silence

    outside my crusted
    window on fraught
    walkway there is
    an idiot would be
    bumbling burglar

    his silhouette behind
    white blinds trying to
    open rusted latches while
    I strike the old window
as hard as I was angry
    yelling deep “HEY!!”

    he almost tumbles
    two stories down
    in his haste to flee
    from something
    so loud bellowing
    summoned at 3am

    Driveway in Summer

    By: Sarah Gregory

    walking my driveway
    gritty gravel scrapping
    boiling sun beats down
    trying to blind the very
    ground

    pines sway in hot summer
    air as parched forest burns
    without a sound

    poison hemlock mimics
    queen anne’s lace by dry
    lake as both plants giggle
    saying solve this riddle
    or drown

    Ambition

    By: Sarah Gregory

    ambition isn’t red
    not near as blood
    as expected
    instead its orange

    orange like spring
    not so bleak as winter
    with its withering
    not so full as summer
    with its achievement

    orange like energy
    when no vibrant reds
    or bold blues abound
    orange skirmish strife
    ambitious yearning in
    fledging shiny life

    Purse Snatcher

    By: Sarah Gregory

    summer sun walks
    with me as I stroll
    down Ybor street
    crowds laughing
    in blazing heat

    as he tries to grab
    my purse from my
    shoulder not ready
    for me to pull back
    as I angrily yank

    falling over sidewalk
    in his haste as mobs
    stop to stare at chaos
    as my blood boils
    my body all teeth
    and claws standing
    boiling straight

    he scrambles to run
as I aim a kick at his
    fearful face
    reminding this
    would be wolf
    why deer have
    fucking antlers

    Ouija Board

    By: Sarah Gregory

    senseless high schoolers
    gather round dim table
    in candlelit wooden den
    within conversation pit
    searching for a different
    type of communication

    we all laugh drunkenly
    as we place our hands
    on red plastic planchette
    hoping they can hear us
    in baited breaths

    we beg for anything
    everything something
    to answer! as we spell
    out Furfur and laugh
    at curious absurdity
    forgetting to say
    goodbye

    The Forest

    By: Sarah Gregory

    there is horror and beauty
    found amongst the woods
    from howls in dark deep
to soft flutes in tall trees

there is a promise and pain
    in every weed whisper and
red root snap along the lane

    beyond human’s fragile
    windows there is a whole
    world belonging to the fey

    Death

    and behold a pale rider
    her name is death
    scream as hell follows
    her wrath

    Coffee Cup

    By: Sarah Gregory

    porcelain coffee cup
    brittle in my hands
    hot black coffee
    swirling deep down

    steam rises sweet
    as I hold small cup
    at my arm’s length

    letting go
    as it falls
    tumbling
    tile bound

    shattering
    disappointed
    another broke
    so easy
