This question won't offend you because people usually ask this out of curiosity, maybe. Letting the fellow Indian acknowledge your roots should never bewilder you. You tell them about your small town ancestry and that you belong to a place which they haven't heard of yet.
"Oh! A small town girl." they say.
"I don't drink." you tell them one fine day unaware of the fact that your life will become your name.
It is the first day of your college and you hear 'SMALL TOWN GIRL' blooming out of the mouth of a boy who has no apology in his body. It's been days in your college and now you have got a bunch of friends by which you mean three, maybe.
SMALL TOWN GIRL
A girl who can't just say yes; can't just fit in; can't help everyone making uncomfortable. That girl who can't just help being uncomfortable; can't just shut up and act like she belongs here. The one who's face is like fine china, who has never had a hangover.
They ask you, "Just try it in case you like it." But you don't. You don't want to because you don't wish to know what guilt feels like.
Aren't you everything they don't want you to be; some kind of mirror everyone keeps breaking? There will never be a day in your life in which 'Small town girl' does not participate in.
You will be asked "Why?", as if there needed to be a reason that could somehow explain you away.
It is the night of your prom and the boy you've loved more than yourself rejects you. You feel your body is a parade of NO. You spend your life stomachaching all your NOs because your friends accuse you of making them uncomfortable with your silent choices.
And you show up, even though you don't want to. But that's what you are and that's what you've been- Silent. You don't know what taught you to be this shameful quiet cover. But your anxiety is a devil; it moulds everything around you into something you fear the most. They walk away with your peace and leave you with your homesickness.
You will be this girl for years until one day you will found your mouth, your beautiful silent mouth and you will be reborn everyday you claim yourself. And you will claim, and claim, and claim until there is no other name anyone can call you but yes, THIS girl nurturing her self esteem.
Menstruation is painful. But we women don't overreact. Stop laughing on women on their peroids videos and memes. Because you don't have any idea how it feels like. And I'm damn sure that you've no idea when women around you are on their periods. So chill and let us live.
